The BBC Philharmonic perform Mahler's Symphony No. 4 with John StorgÄrds conducting, alongside Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto with Alina Ibragimova.
The BBC Philharmonic are at The Bridgewater Hall on Saturday 24 October, with John StorgÄrds conducting. It's a three-piece programme that opens with Cassandra Miller's Swim, a seventeen-minute piece built from two Schumann chords repeated until they blur, then running through variations suggested by Anne Carson's essay on swimming. The abiding image there is Schumann swimming in Carson's Canadian lake.
Next is Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto in E minor, twenty-six minutes with Alina Ibragimova on violin. Mendelssohn described it to violinist Ferdinand David in 1838 as an E-minor theme that simply kept running through his head.
The night closes with Mahler's Symphony No. 4, fifty-six minutes with soprano Sheva Tehoval. It's the outlier of his symphonic cycle: where the first three write from an adult's point of view, this one asks how a child's perspective might differ. It lands on Das himmlische Leben, the movement he composed first and a childlike vision of heaven.
