Pianist Angela Hewitt performs a recital of Beethoven piano sonatas, including the Pathétique and The Tempest, as part of the Beethoven 200 series.
Angela Hewitt returns to The Bridgewater Hall on Thursday 20 May 2027, with a recital of Beethoven piano sonatas. It's part of the hall's International Concert Series, and Hewitt is a longtime favourite there, so it's a familiar face back on the stage.
The programme pairs the pocket-sized Piano Sonata No.19, Op.49 No.1 and Piano Sonata No.20, Op.49 No.2 with two of the composer's most famous creations: the stormy Piano Sonata No.17, Op.31 No.2 'The Tempest' and the canonical Piano Sonata No.8, Op.13 'Pathétique', which carries one of his finest slow movements. It closes with the penultimate of his 32 piano sonatas, the deeply personal Piano Sonata No.31, Op.110, which Hewitt describes as "music of great tenderness".
The recital sits within Beethoven 200, The Bridgewater Hall's series marking the 200th anniversary of Ludwig van Beethoven's death in 1827. The whole series is built around some of his most significant works, from symphonies and piano concertos to the solo sonatas, and Hewitt has won wide acclaim from critics and audiences for her Beethoven sonata cycle.
