A book launch by Stanchion Books where psychologist Damien Pearse examines the emotions and loyalty surrounding football.
Damien Pearse is at The Blue Monk on Friday 16 October, talking about his new book, Why Football Means Everything (Even When It Shouldn't). It's a book launch hosted by Stanchion Books, and the whole thing is free, so it's an easy one to drop into if you're around that evening.
Pearse is a psychologist, and that's exactly where he starts from. He sets out to uncover what drives people's obsession with football, and he doesn't just stick to the theory. Along the way he meets superfans, scientists, players and trolls, so the book pulls in voices from across the whole spectrum of the game. It's as much about the people as it is about the sport, and it looks at the loyalty and the emotions that keep people coming back, even when the game itself is letting them down.
If you've ever wondered why we get so worked up over twenty-two people chasing a ball, or why the connection to a club can feel like something you can't quite explain to anyone who doesn't get it, that's the ground he's covering. It's a look at the psychological side of being a fan, and it doesn't shy away from the more difficult parts of that, like the trolls who live on the darker end of the online conversation.
