The Piccadilly Sinfonietta, with guest soloist Jenny Sacha, plays Vivaldi's 'The Four Seasons' by candlelight in St James's Church, Piccadilly.
The Piccadilly Sinfonietta bring Vivaldi's The Four Seasons to St James's Piccadilly on Saturday 24 October, with guest violin soloist Jenny Sacha leading the way. It's a candlelight performance, so the church will be lit by candles rather than the usual house lights, which changes the whole feel of the room.
The Four Seasons takes up the bulk of the evening — the full set of four concertos, Op. 8, Nos. 1-4, played in sequence. Around it, the ensemble adds a few other well-known pieces: Handel's Arrival of the Queen of Sheba, Bach's Air on the G String, and two from Mozart, the Overture from Le nozze di Figaro and Eine kleine Nachtmusik. It's a broad sweep of the baroque and classical repertoire, and you'll recognise almost every piece on the bill.
The ensemble is the Piccadilly Sinfonietta, a group that gives more than 200 performances a year and specialises in baroque, classical and early romantic concerto repertoire. They've become a mainstay of the British classical scene, and Classic FM has described them as 'stunning'. This is an in-person performance, not a recording or a broadcast, and it runs for just under two hours.
