The Natural History Museum's first mixed reality experience, where visitors wear HoloLens 2 headsets to explore eight future ecosystems.
Visions of Nature is running at the Natural History Museum in South Kensington until 31 October, and it's the museum's first mixed reality experience. The whole thing is set 100 years in the future, imagining a world where people and the planet are thriving. You put on a Microsoft HoloLens 2 headset and are guided through eight different ecosystems by Hope, a built-in scientific copilot who talks you through what you're seeing.
Two of the scenes give you a good sense of the range. One is a Scottish Highland where lynx have been reintroduced; the other is an ice-free Arctic Ocean home to narlugas, imagined narwhal-beluga hybrids. It's the museum's first time working with mixed reality, combining the technology with their own science to build out these future landscapes. The experience forms part of the museum's Fixing Our Broken Planet initiative and was co-produced with Saola Studio in partnership with Microsoft, with support from the French Centre National du Cinéma.
Time Out gave it three stars, calling it an "intriguing curio" whose ideas needed more room. It's a short one, about 20 minutes, so it's an easy addition to a day at the museum rather than a full afternoon's commitment. One thing to keep in mind: it's for visitors aged 10 and over only, as the headsets are too large for younger children.
