Free conversation with the Reverend Richard Coles and Baroness Ayesha Hazarika on how the media earns and loses trust.
The Reverend Richard Coles and Baroness Ayesha Hazarika are coming together at St Paul's Cathedral on Tuesday 20 October for a conversation about trust in the media. It's a pairing that works because of where they're coming from: Coles, the former pop star turned priest and broadcaster, and Hazarika, the former political advisor and commentator. Both have spent their careers in the public eye, and both know exactly how the media machinery works from the inside.
That's where the conversation starts. They'll be talking about how the media earns trust, how it loses it, and what's actually at stake when that trust breaks down. It's not just a theoretical chat, either; they're drawing on their own experiences across broadcasting, politics and public communication to look at the state of media credibility today. A good part of the evening will be spent on the conditions under which public discourse can still function — or whether it's become too fractured to work as it used to.
The whole thing is presented by the St Paul's Cathedral Institute and the Associateship of King's College London, so it sits at the intersection of the church, the university and the public square. It's the kind of evening that's less about a set of answers and more about hearing two people who've lived through the thing they're discussing. If you've spent any time wondering why it's so hard to agree on the facts these days, this is exactly the conversation that gets into the why of it.
