Interdisciplinary show by Tice Cin about grief, music production and her Turkish Cypriot family home, with monologues, projections, music and sound design.
Tice Cin brings Safe Spaces to the Purcell Room on Thursday 29 October, as part of the London Literature Festival. It's a live show built around the book of the same name, published by Granta, which follows an unnamed young musician navigating grief, music production and her Turkish Cypriot family home. The book draws on a songbook, poetry, therapy transcripts and a community journal, and the stage version pulls those elements apart into monologues, projections, music and sound design.
Cin is an award-winning author and interdisciplinary artist from north London, and she runs her own production company, Neoprene Genie. Her work often comes back to the idea of being outside the spaces you're supposed to belong to, and the portals that living opens up. Her debut novel, Keeping the House (2021), won a Somerset Maugham Award and was shortlisted for the Desmond Elliot Prize and a British Book Award; her BBC Radio 4 documentary How Much Can You Say? took home an Audio Production Award.
On the night, Cin is joined on stage by BODUR and Eliza-Rose, with visuals by her Neoprene Genie team and scoring by KMNC and Cin herself. There are musical contributions from Tah, Albertina and Namak as well. The show is presented in association with the Service95 Book Club, founded by Dua Lipa, who also curates the London Literature Festival — London's longest-running literary festival.
