World stage premiere musical based on Wladyslaw Szpilman's memoir, directed by Thom Southerland and presented by Wolk Transfer Company.
The Pianist opens at the Park Theatre on 24 October, running through to 28 November. It's the world stage premiere of a new musical based on Wladyslaw Szpilman's memoir, and it's a bit of a hybrid: part play with music, part edited retelling of the book, narrated by the actor who plays Szpilman. It's presented by Wolk Transfer Company in association with the Park Theatre, by special production arrangement with Andreas Szpilman.
The story follows Szpilman, a celebrated Polish-Jewish pianist and composer whose life was torn apart by the Nazi occupation of Warsaw, through the devastation of the Holocaust. The production draws on the 2002 Oscar and BAFTA-winning film by Roman Polanski, starring Adrien Brody, and is described as a love letter to culture and to the artists who carried it through one of history's darkest chapters. It brings Szpilman's own music to the stage for the first time, played by a cast of actor-musicians whose score conjures the golden age of Jewish Warsaw.
Daniel Krikler takes the role of Wladyslaw Szpilman, with Rosalind Ford, Oliver Grant, TJ Holmes, Mischa Jardine, Elżbieta Kalicka, Nitai Levi, Melania Maggiore and Max Roll. Thom Southerland directs, with music by Wladyslaw Szpilman, arrangements and orchestrations by Simon Lee and musical direction by Malcolm Forbes-Peckham.
