New Year's Eve midnight auction soirée at the Victorian pawn-shop cocktail bar Mr Fogg's Pawnbrokers in Soho.
The Midnight Auction takes over Mr Fogg's Pawnbrokers in Soho on Thursday 31 December, running from 10:30pm right through to 3am. It's a New Year's Eve night that starts late and carries on well past midnight, so it's one of those where you can roll in after dinner and stay until the early hours.
The venue itself is a bit of a find. Mr Fogg's Pawnbrokers is an immersive Victorian pawn-shop cocktail bar tucked behind a shop front on Dean Street, and legend has it that it's run by Frank Fogg, the wayward half-brother of Phileas Fogg. Inside, there are three rooms — The Pawnbrokers Counter, The Strong Room and The Textiles Room — all packed with eccentric artefacts. The cocktails arrive in an eclectic mix of antique vessels, from ornate Fabergé-style eggs to punch bowls, and the menu is presented as a collection of treasures to be examined at the counter, sometimes even through a jeweller's loupe.
It's part of the wider Mr Fogg's collection of Victorian-inspired bars and taverns across Mayfair, Covent Garden, Fitzrovia, Soho and the City, which are known for live music, late-night events and theatrical soirées like murder mysteries, cockney singalongs and treasure hunts. This one fits right in with that tradition.
