Supper club by Bompas & Parr on the 14th floor of Space House, with a revolving dining table and a menu inspired by astronomy and science.
Bompas & Parr are taking over Space House in Holborn for The Gastrolabe, a rotating supper club that runs from 3 to 8 November. The name comes from the astrolabe, the instrument once used to chart the heavens, and the whole thing is built around that: the ancient belief in the harmony of the spheres and the way humans have used science, geometry and ritual to make sense of their place in the cosmos. They've also drawn on Johannes Kepler's Mysterium Cosmographicum for the theme.
The setting is Space House, a Grade-II listed 1960s tower at 1 Kemble Street that once housed the Civil Aviation Authority. In 1967, Concrete Quarterly described it as 'powerfully eye-catching', and for this, you'll be on the 14th floor. Up there, 51 diners sit at a monumental table built in three independently revolving sections. The sections turn at intervals throughout the evening, so you drift away from your original neighbours and end up meeting new clusters of people as the night goes on.
The menu pulls from astronomy, music, physics, planetary science, material innovation and gastronomy. Bompas & Parr are known for the kind of food that doesn't quite fit in a normal category — past menus have included edible cigarettes, gold leaf jelly and ice cream disguised as chicken burgers. The whole thing is billed as a 'Planetary Carousel of Conviviality'.
