Eight-week ceramics course led by artist Francisco Zhan on handbuilding, carving and surface decoration at the community pottery studio SET Ceramics.
Francisco Zhan is running an eight-week ceramics course at SET Ceramics from 7 September to 26 October. It's a handbuilding class, so you'll be working with your hands rather than the wheel, and the focus is on carving and surface decoration. Over the two months, you'll build your pieces and then work into the clay, carving patterns and textures into the surface before they go to the kiln.
SET Ceramics is a contemporary community pottery studio run by the arts organisation and registered charity SET. It's tucked into a converted former cobbler's shop near Fenchurch Street and Tower Gateway stations, and it describes itself as the only dedicated ceramics studio in the Square Mile. It works as both an independent studio for members and an artist-led learning environment for the public, so it's as much a place to drop in and work as it is to take a course. Alongside studio memberships for practising makers, it runs courses, private classes, kiln hire and team workshops, all led by working ceramic artists.

The space is well-equipped for a studio of its size: four pottery wheels, a 220-litre kiln, hand-building stations and glazing facilities. Sessions are kept small, typically four to six people, and each programme is shaped by the tutor's own practice, which means you're learning from someone who actually makes a living from the craft rather than just teaching it. If you're already a SET Studio Member or live in the City of London, there are discounts to be had. The course runs from 7 September to 26 October at SET Ceramics, 35 Crutched Friars, London, EC3N 2AE.
