Sunday roast with fire- and smoke-cooked British produce at The Parakeet gastropub in Kentish Town.
The Parakeet does Sunday roasts every Sunday in Kentish Town, with the dining room open from 12pm to 7pm. The whole thing is built around a custom grill, and they cook everything over fire and smoke. The signature dishes are smoke-infused: hay-smoked chicken and whole grilled sea bream are the ones they're known for.
There's a bit of history to the place. It's an old Victorian building, formerly The Oxford Tavern, taken over by The Columbo Group — the same outfit behind The Blues Kitchen, The Jazz Cafe and Phonox. It opened in 2023 under two Brat alumni, Ben Allen and Ed Jennings, who brought that same open-fire approach to the kitchen. The room splits in two: a lively front bar that works like a traditional pub, and a warmer dining room beyond a curtain, with floor-to-ceiling windows and an original bar of decorative stained glass.
The menu leans on British produce at its seasonal height. The sharing plates of ox cheek and bream riff on the beef and turbot sharers Brat became famous for, and the wine list focuses on natural, organic and biodynamic bottles. It's already made its way into The Good Food Guide's top 100 pubs and SquareMeal's London Top 100 Restaurants.
