Self-supported gravel sportive run by Hidden Tracks Cycling from the Herne Hill Velodrome into the Surrey Hills and North Downs, with live GPS tracking.
Southern Grit returns to Herne Hill Velodrome on Sunday 25 April 2027, a gravel sportive run by Hidden Tracks Cycling as part of a wider festival that brings several sporting events to the track over the weekend. The ride heads south from the velodrome into the Surrey Hills and the North Downs, opening with a climb to Crystal Palace before picking up fast woodland sections and chalky North Downs ascents. Both routes keep a sting in the tail for the finish.
It's aimed at confident gravel riders who're comfortable navigating by GPX rather than following a guided procession, and it's run as a self-supported sportive rather than a race. The event is best known for its live GPS tracking: every rider carries a tracker, and friends and family can follow each dot on a live public map while you're out. Timed for late April, the trails are often still carpeted with bluebells, and the day rounds off back at the velodrome with pizza and beer.
