Concert by guzheng player Siqian Li and baritone Kang Yang exploring the Silk Road, with works by Fazil Say, Albéniz, Babajanian and Chu Wanghua.
Siqian Li and Kang Yang play World Heart Beat Embassy Gardens on Friday 30 October, as part of the venue's Silk Road Music Festival. Li is a Chinese guzheng virtuoso, and she's joined here by baritone Kang Yang for a programme she's curated herself, titled Echoes of the Silk Wind.
The set brings together works by Fazil Say, Albéniz, Babajanian and Chu Wanghua. The guzheng is a traditional Chinese plucked zither, and having it paired with a baritone voice puts it in a conversation with Western classical traditions. The programme is built around the idea of how melodies evolved as they travelled across the Silk Road, drawing on sounds from China's landscapes through to Andalusia and highlighting the shared musical language that connects them. Li describes it as a musical journey along that route, redefining Chinese music on a global stage.
It's a long evening — the concert runs about three and a half hours — and it's open to all ages, so it works as a night out for a few friends or something to bring the family along to. The venue is wheelchair accessible, too.
