Special evening at The London Archives, with Northeastern University London, about the life, work and music of Ignatius Sancho.
Searching for Sancho is a special evening at Barnard's Inn Hall in the City of London on Monday 26 October, from 6:00pm to 9:00pm. It's put on by The London Archives in collaboration with Northeastern University London, and it runs as part of the Open House Festival 2026.
The whole night is devoted to the life, work and music of Ignatius Sancho, the 18th-century composer, writer and publisher. He was one of the first people of African descent to publish a collection of English songs, and the evening is built around celebrating that legacy. If you've come across his name before but never really looked into what he did, this is a good place to start.
Because it's part of the Open House Festival, it's one of the many things happening across the city that weekend, so it's easy to pair it with other visits. The London Archives are the ones hosting, and they've teamed up with Northeastern University London to bring it together, which gives you a sense of the kind of evening this is — more of a curated celebration than a standard concert.
