Free public lecture by Dr Ranita Chatterjee on the global flows and shifting impacts of Indian cinema over almost a hundred years.
Dr Ranita Chatterjee is taking the stage at Barnard's Inn Hall on Wednesday 28 October for Around the World with Indian Cinema, a lecture that looks at how Indian film has travelled across the globe and what it's left in its wake over the last century. It's part of Gresham College's Global Film Cultures series, and the talk runs from 18:00 to 19:00.
India is one of the world's largest film-producing nations, with a history that goes back well over a hundred years. A good part of the talk focuses on how it's managed to hold its own against Hollywood—something richer countries, Britain included, have struggled to do. From there, Chatterjee traces the global flows of Indian cinema: the ways it's moved across borders, the different cultures it's influenced, and how those impacts have shifted over the decades. It's as much about the cinema-going cultures that grew around these films as it is about the films themselves.
Chatterjee brings a fair bit of weight to the subject. She's a Visiting Professor of Film and a Senior Lecturer in Film and Television Studies at the University of Exeter, and her research pulls from both film history and film theory. The session sits within Gresham College's Global Film Cultures series, and the college has been offering its educational talks free to the public for more than 400 years.
