Free public lecture in which Rana Foroohar discusses her book 'Sea Change: The New Great Game in the Arctic', chaired by Professor Chris Alden.
Rana Foroohar is speaking at the London School of Economics on Thursday 22 October, discussing her book Sea Change: The New Great Game in the Arctic. The talk runs from 6.30pm to 8pm in MAR 1.08 of the Marshall Building, and it's free to attend.
Foroohar's argument is a provocative one: she contends that a new 'Great Game' is being played out in the Arctic, where Russia and China are working together to challenge America's territorial primacy in the Western Hemisphere. The point she makes is that this isn't happening in Central Asia, nor in the current hot zones like Ukraine, Gaza or the South China Seas, but up in the far north. It's a shift in focus that moves the geopolitical centre of gravity away from the places that usually dominate the news.
Foroohar is an award-winning journalist who knows her way around a global story. She's the Global Business Columnist and an Associate Editor at the Financial Times, and a global economic analyst for CNN. Before that, she was assistant managing editor and economic columnist at TIME, and an economic and foreign affairs editor and foreign correspondent at Newsweek. She's a life member of the Council on Foreign Relations and sits on the advisory board of the Open Markets Institute. This isn't her first book, either; she's written The Homecoming, Don't Be Evil and Makers and Takers.

Chairing the session is Professor Chris Alden, who teaches International Relations at LSE and is Director of LSE IDEAS. He'll be leading the conversation around Sea Change, so expect the book's main thesis to be the starting point for the whole evening. The talk is free, and it runs from 6.30pm to 8pm on Thursday 22 October at MAR 1.08 in the Marshall Building.
