10-mile easy day hike from London to the New Forest National Park, with a minibus, Mountain Leader guide, a lunch stop in Brockenhurst and drinks in Lyndhurst.
London Social Hiking are running a day trip to the New Forest National Park on Sunday 25 October, with the meeting point outside Novotel London West (1 Shortlands, W6 8DR, a five-minute walk from Hammersmith Station). It's a 10-mile (16km) easy-rated walk with 150m of ascent, taking in a 16-seater minibus with a qualified Mountain Leader at the helm.
The New Forest is said to hold the highest concentration of ancient woodland in Western Europe, with more than a thousand veteran treesโsome already growing when Elizabeth I sent the English fleet out to face the Armada. It became a national park in 2005, though it had been a royal hunting ground long before that, established by William the Conqueror. The park's most famous residents are the New Forest ponies, which roam freely across much of the open forest. In the village of Brockenhurst, ponies, donkeys, deer and cattle are known to wander the main street, and one pony has even been known to pop into a local pub. Lyndhurst is called the 'capital' of the New Forest.
