Free screening of the film 'The People's Emergency Briefing' followed by a panel discussion on how urban design can help cities adapt to climate change.
The V&A South Kensington is hosting a screening of The People's Emergency Briefing on Wednesday 21 October, followed by a panel discussion on how we adapt our cities for a warmer climate. The film brings together nine UK scientists and experts who update the audience on the climate and nature crisis and its impact on everyday life — food security, extreme weather, health, and the cost of living. It's presented by the V&A in partnership with the Construction Industry Council and the Chartered Institute of Building, and the whole thing is framed as a call to action for the construction and built environment industry on how urban design and working with communities can help cities like London adapt to rising temperatures and extreme weather.
After the screening, the conversation moves to a panel chaired by the V&A's Head of Sustainability, Melissa Painter. Joining her are Saul Humphrey, President of the CIOB and Professor of Sustainable Construction at Anglia Ruskin University; Mina Hasman OBE, Global Head of Climate Strategy at SOM; David Ogunmuyiwa, partner and founder of Architecture Doing Places and a Mayor's Design Advocate for London; and Polly Turton, Director of Shade the UK. It's a broad spread of voices from across construction, architecture, and climate strategy, so the discussion should pull in a few different angles on how we actually go about making a city climate-ready.
