Piano recital by Rose McLachlan of Liszt's Paganini Etudes, Debussy, Fauré and Chopin in the candlelit setting of St Mary le Strand.
Rose McLachlan brings her Paganini Plus recital to St Mary Le Strand on Thursday 22 October, a candlelit evening in the historic church on the Strand. The programme is built around Liszt's 6 Paganini Etudes, the set of virtuoso pieces that take Paganini's violin writing and translate it for the piano. Alongside them, she'll play a selection of Debussy's Préludes, including Feux d'artifice, Fauré's Barcarolle No. 3, and Chopin's Andante Spianato et Grande Polonaise Brillante. It's a heavy-hitting list of piano writing, and the candlelit setting of the church changes the whole feel of it.
McLachlan comes from a musical family and started piano lessons with her father at seven. She studied at Chetham's School of Music under Helen Krizos, then the Royal Northern College of Music from 2020, and is now at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama studying with Charles Owen, Martin Roscoe and Ronan O'Hora. She made her debut at 13 at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and has since performed with the BBC Concert Orchestra, conducted by Barry Wordsworth, and the Fort Worth Symphony after winning the PianoTexas Festival concerto competition.
In 2023 she played Saint-Saëns' Carnival of the Animals with the Hallé at the Bridgewater Hall, and in September 2024 she took part in Mozart's triple piano concerto with Jean-Efflam Bavouzet and Andrea Nemecz, which was broadcast on BBC Radio 3 and released on the Chandos label. Her Liszt Paganini Etudes have drawn critical praise, with The New York Times calling her an impressive pianist and The Times describing them as beautifully played.
