Talk by Professor Jerry Palmer on the memoirs of volunteer nurses who served on all sides during the First World War.
Jerry Palmer is at the National Army Museum on Friday 23 October, talking about the nurses who served during the First World War. It's a lunchtime session, running from 12.00pm to 1.00pm, and it's free, though you'll need to book your place in advance.
Palmer's talk, Nurses' Memories of the Great War, comes from the memoirs of volunteer nurses who served on all sides of the conflict and across its different fronts. He's spent time with accounts that have often been overlooked, and he uses them to reconstruct their day-to-day lives. He looks at how their own views of the war compared with the broader public discourse of the time, and points out the common threads that ran through the experiences of nurses across the different combatant nations.
Palmer is a former Professor of Communications at London Metropolitan University and has written widely on history, literature and media. His most recent book is Nurse Memoirs from the Great War in Britain, France and Germany, published in 2021, which is the work this talk draws on. The session is part of the museum's Health and Medicine / First World War / Women exhibition, so if you're already spending time with that, this fits right in.
