Candlelit piano recital by Warren Mailley-Smith and Christina Lawrie with Beethoven's 'Moonlight' Sonata at St Mary Le Strand.
Moonlight Sonata by Candlelight comes to St Mary Le Strand on Friday 23 October, with Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 14 in C-sharp minor, Op. 27 No. 2 — the one everyone knows as the Moonlight Sonata — at the heart of the programme. It's a piano recital, so the whole thing is built around the keyboard, and the Moonlight is the piece that gives the night its name.
Two pianists, Warren Mailley-Smith and Christina Lawrie, share the bill, and the Moonlight sits right in the middle of the set. The rest of the programme is built around it, so you'll get more than just that one piece. It's a classical piano evening, not a single-work performance, and the Moonlight is the anchor the other pieces revolve around.
The venue is St Mary Le Strand, a Baroque church at the eastern end of the Strand. The present building dates to the 18th century and is regarded as a jewel of baroque architecture in the heart of London, with ornate ceilings, historic charm and stunning acoustics. The recital fills the candlelit interior, and the whole thing is part of the church's Public and Cultural Programme of candlelight concerts, which pairs classical piano works with the building's atmospheric setting and welcomes guest appearances by renowned UK and international concert pianists.
