Meet the author session where Dr William Ackah presents his book 'The Black PhD Experience' on the experiences of Black PhD students in the UK.
Dr William Ackah is coming to the School of Public Health, White City Campus on Wednesday 28 October to talk about his book, The Black PhD Experience. He's a Senior Lecturer at Birkbeck University, and the session is being hosted by the School of Public Health Race Equity Working Group as part of Black History Month.
If you've never come across the book, it's a look at the experiences of Black PhD students in the UK. It doesn't just describe what those students have gone through; it sets out recommendations for change to help overcome the challenges facing Black postgraduate researchers. That's the core of the talk: the reality of the PhD experience for Black researchers and what needs to shift to make it better.

It's a session open to everyone, so you don't need to be a PhD student or an academic to get something out of it. Whether you're in higher education yourself, interested in race and equity in the UK, or just want to hear a first-hand account of this particular corner of university life, it's a good place to start. The talk runs from 16:00 to 17:00 in Room 202 at the White City Campus, and it's free to attend on a first-come, first-served basis, with no advance registration needed.
