Family classical concert by the London Philharmonic Orchestra, with presenter Rachel Leach, celebrating pioneering composers.
The London Philharmonic Orchestra are at the Royal Festival Hall on Saturday 5 June 2027, with LPO FUNharmonics: Rule-breakers and Risk-takers taking the stage at 12pm. It's part of their FUNharmonics family series, which is built to open classical music to the whole family: fast-paced shows led by a presenter who breaks down the music or tells a story, with a big screen showing projected images behind the orchestra and plenty of audience participation. This one is presented by Rachel Leach and conducted by Enyi Okpara.
The theme is musical heroes. This edition honours pioneering composers who blazed trails despite facing tough challenges, and the programme reflects that. You'll hear music by Ludwig van Beethoven and Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, but also by Joseph Bologne and Ethel Smyth, among others. It's a mix of the household names and the figures who pushed against the grain, all held together by Leach's presentation rather than left to run as a standard concert.
It's a family-friendly slot, and the format is designed to be accessible: the presenter guides you through the music, the screen keeps things visual, and the audience gets involved. The whole thing runs for about an hour, so it's a relatively short commitment for a Saturday midday. It's also part of the LPO's Classical Season - Spring/Summer 2027, so it's one of several concerts they're running across the season.
