Monthly open-mic night for new comics at The Comedy Store, judged by three audience members who can gong them off, strictly 18+.
King Gong is back at The Comedy Store on Monday 28 December, from 7:30pm to 11:00pm. It's an open-mic night that runs on the last Monday of every month, so if you miss this one, there's another coming around in January.
The format is what gives the night its name. Thirty new comics are each given five minutes on stage, and three audience members act as judges. If all three raise their red cards, the act is gonged off mid-set. It's billed as London's most brutal open mic, and that's not an exaggeration – the audience is the one in charge here. They decide who survives, they crown a winner who holds the title of King Gong until the next month, and, as the night's description puts it, it's said to dash a few hopes, shatter a few dreams and launch the occasional superstar.
Because it's an open mic, you're seeing people at the very start of their careers, often trying out material for the first time in front of a crowd. That's where the unpredictability comes from – some sets land, some don't, and the gong is always there for when things go south. The night is run by the Gongmeister, who describes the whole thing as raw, chaotic and always unpredictable, and the audience is given the chance to take part themselves, so you're as much a part of the evening as you are a spectator.
