Monthly open-mic comedy night on the last Monday of each month, where the audience judges 30 new comics and crowns the 'King Gong'.
King Gong returns to The Comedy Store on Monday 26 October, the last Monday of the month. It's billed as London's most brutal open mic night, and the format lives up to that: around 30 new comics are challenged to stay on stage for five minutes, and the audience holds the power. Three people from the crowd act as judges, and if all three raise their red cards, the act is gonged off immediately. It's a bit of a gamble for the comics, and the room usually reacts accordingly — some cheer the gonging, others boo it.
The audience is the one that decides who survives, and the night has a reputation for dashing a few hopes, shattering a few dreams, and launching the occasional superstar. The winner is crowned 'King Gong' and holds the title until the following month, when the whole thing starts again. It's strictly 18+, run as a raucous night out rather than a polite evening of comedy, so it's not one for the faint-hearted.
