Book launch of the biography 'John Berger: From Life', with author Tom Overton in conversation with Gareth Evans.
Tom Overton is at the Newington Green Meeting House on Wednesday 28 October to mark the launch of John Berger: From Life, his new biography of the writer and critic. It's a conversation rather than a lecture: Overton will be joined on stage by Gareth Evans, and the two will spend the evening talking through the book.
If you're not already familiar, John Berger was one of the most influential voices in art and politics of the last century. He's best known for Ways of Seeing, the 1972 BBC series and book that changed how millions of people look at painting, but his work went far beyond that — from his novels and essays to his deep interest in the lives of ordinary people. From Life is the first full-length biography of him, so this is one of the first chances to hear Overton talk about the research and the life he's traced.
Having the author in conversation with someone else usually makes for a better night than a solo reading, as it lets the conversation wander and gives you a sense of the person behind the book. If you've followed Berger's work or just fancy a proper look at his life, this is a good place to start.
