Tate Modern's first exhibition of ink painting, with around 80 works by key artists from mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan organised around the themes 'Life', 'the Garden' and 'Breath'.
Ink opens at Tate Modern on 22 April 2027, and it's the gallery's first exhibition ever dedicated to ink painting, a discipline that goes back centuries. Around 80 works are on display, and they're organised around three themes: 'Life', 'the Garden' and 'Breath'. The show focuses on key artists from mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan who helped reinvent ink painting for the twentieth century.
By tracing the connections between them, the exhibition reveals a vibrant regional network and challenges some of the more familiar Western narratives of modern art — including ideas of originality, expressionism and the avant-garde. It's presented with the support of the Hyundai Tate Research Centre: Transnational, in partnership with Hyundai Motor.
