Centenary evening marking what would have been John Berger's 100th birthday, with live contributions, film and audio clips and stage readings by actors Khalid Abdalla and Juliet Stevenson.
Here Is Where We Meet comes to Conway Hall on Thursday 5 November, a night marking what would have been the centenary of John Berger's birth. Berger (1926–2017) was one of the most influential writers and thinkers of his time, and he worked across almost every form: storyteller, essayist, novelist, screenwriter, playwright, painter, broadcaster, poet, dramatist and critic. Working alone or with Jean Mohr, he published more than thirty titles, including the best-selling Ways of Seeing and the Booker Prize-winning novel G. He spent years living and working in Quincy, a small French peasant community that became the setting for his trilogy Into Their Labours, and in 2009 he and Beverly Bancroft donated his archives to the British Library.
The evening is curated and hosted by Gareth Evans and brings together live contributions, film and audio clips, and stage readings of Berger's work by actors Khalid Abdalla and Juliet Stevenson. There's an interval, so it's a full night rather than a quick drop-in. It's part of a wider series of film and event screenings running from 28 October to 2 December, and this particular night gathers a constellation of artists, writers, thinkers, activists, family and friends paying tribute to him and to the work that moved them.
