Free gun salute by The King's Troop Royal Horse Artillery in Green Park to mark the King's birthday.
The King's Troop Royal Horse Artillery will be firing gun salutes in Green Park and the Tower of London on Saturday 14 November, starting at 12:00pm. It's a royal gun salute to mark the King's actual birthday, which falls on this date, whereas his official birthday is celebrated on 13 June. On the day, the Union flag will also be hoisted on government buildings across the city.
Royal gun salutes are fired to mark special royal occasions, and they aren't just limited to London; they go off from authorised stations all over the United Kingdom. The number of rounds depends on the location and the occasion: the basic salute is 21 rounds, but an extra 20 are added in Hyde Park and Green Park because they're Royal Parks, bringing the total there to 41. They usually go off at midday and never on a Sunday — if the date falls on a Sunday, the salute is moved to the following day.
