In-person talk by Dr Tracy Fahey reimagining the Hag as a figure of power, wisdom and resistance, followed by a Q&A.
Dr Tracy Fahey is at 21Soho on Monday 2 November for a talk titled Folklore, Female Ageing & The Hag. It's an in-person session that runs from 19:30, with a Q&A to follow, so you'll have a chance to ask your own questions once she's finished.
Fahey's talk centres on the Hag, or Cailleach, a sensual and powerful older sovereignty goddess rooted in folklore. For a long time, the figure has been reduced to a symbol of fear or ridicule, but she's resurged in contemporary culture through films like Weapons and Hokum and through books by Sharon Blackie and Manchán Magan. Fahey reclaims her as a figure of power, transformation, wisdom and resistance, tied to ageing, femininity, nature and power.
Fahey is an Irish author and academic with a PhD in the Gothic, and she lectures in creative writing, folk horror and contemporary Gothic at the Limerick School of Art and Design, TUS. Her writing has won the Rubery International Book Award, the Paul Cave Prize for Literature and a Saari Fellowship from the Kone Foundation. Her recent work explores the intersection of female folklore and midlife anxieties, with titles such as They Shut Me Up (2023), Queens of the Crone Age (2026) and Women Changing (2027).
