Talk by strategic fashion consultant Avis Ellis-Charles with stylists Wale Adeyemi and Cynthia Lawrence-John on the fashion of Black British music, linked to the V&A exhibition 'The Music is Black'.
The Fashion Styling of Black British Music 1990 – 2020 is on at the V&A South Kensington on Saturday 21 November, running from 13:00 to 17:00 in the Hochhauser Auditorium. It's a V&A Academy talk that opens up the artistry of fashion styling for Black music, and the stories behind the visual and sartorial identities of the genres celebrated in the museum's exhibition The Music is Black: A British Story.
Strategic fashion consultant Dr Avis Ellis-Charles leads the conversation with stylists Wale Adeyemi MBE and Cynthia Lawrence-John. They'll be talking through how they've worked within an industry that relies on new visual identities to catch record buyers' interest, and the specific ways they've built those looks around the music. The conversation follows the sounds of Jungle, drum & bass, Trip Hop, UK Garage and Grime, and their various subgenres, so the talk moves across the different eras and styles that have shaped the scene over the decades.
The session is part of a wider celebration of The Music is Black: A British Story, an exhibition that covers 125 years of Black music-making in Britain. It features an immersive sound experience with over 120 tracks played through a headset, supported by the Ford Foundation and The Huo Family Foundation, with sound experience support from Sennheiser and collaboration with Usomo. The BBC has also put together a season of content across iPlayer and Sounds to mark the show.
