Pianist Elisabeth Leonskaja plays three of Schubert's final masterpieces, the Three Piano Pieces D.946, the Wanderer Fantasy and the B-flat Sonata D.960.
Elisabeth Leonskaja plays a full programme of Schubert at Queen Elizabeth Hall on Friday 7 May 2027, starting at 7pm. It's a solo recital that brings together three of the composer's final masterpieces, each from a different side of his writing. The evening runs for about two hours.
She opens with the Three Piano Pieces, D.946, written during Schubert's last year. They move between restless urgency, song-like tenderness and a kind of disarming simplicity that's hard to pin down. From there, the scale shifts with the Fantasy in C, D.760, better known as the Wanderer Fantasy. It draws on Schubert's own song Der Wanderer and pushes the piano to an almost orchestral scale, turning a single instrument into something much larger. The night closes with the Piano Sonata no. 21 in B flat major, D.960, completed just weeks before he died.
Leonskaja has spent a lifetime working with Schubert, and that's what she's bringing to the stage here. The programme is built around the lyricism, the drama and the silences that run through his late work. Critics have called her 'a powerful figure' in The Guardian and noted her 'radiance and delicacy' in The Arts Desk.
