Expert-led psychology talk by Professor Viren Swami on why we think, feel and act the way we do, with a Q&A, in a bar setting.
Prof Viren Swami brings Curious Hour: Psychology Explained to 21Soho on Saturday 28 November, part of a relaxed, social lecture series that moves psychology talks out of the lecture hall and into a bar. The session is a 40-minute talk followed by a 10-minute Q&A, so it's a fairly tight window rather than a whole night.
The whole idea of Curious Hour is to pair expert-led psychology with a bar-night vibe: a talk with a drink in hand, a bar atmosphere, and an open Q&A to finish. Each session is fronted by an expert psychologist who unpacks the mental processes behind thoughts, emotions, decision-making and behaviour using clear language and relatable examples, and with no self-help platitudes. The series rotates between two topics: 'Attraction Explained', how geography, appearance, reciprocity and similarity shape who we fall for, and 'Love, Actually', what love is across history and science, from psychoanalysis to neuroscience, including a personal love-style assessment.
Swami is a Professor of Social Psychology at Anglia Ruskin University and is ranked in the top 2% of the world's most-cited scientists, with over 300 academic papers and three books, among them Attraction Explained and The Psychology of Physical Attraction. He's one of the series' expert psychologists, so the talk comes from someone who spends his working life researching exactly these things.
