Technical lecture by Matt Hubble on sprayed concrete lining tunnelling beneath operational London Underground infrastructure, with case studies and a Q&A.
Matt Hubble, project manager at Mace Dragados, is talking about complex SCL tunnelling beneath London at the Institution of Civil Engineers on Thursday 5 November. It's a session put on by the British Tunnelling Society Young Members (BTSYM), and it runs from 18:00 to 20:00.
Hubble's talk is built around his own practical experience with sprayed concrete lining (SCL) tunnelling under the city, working alongside operational Underground infrastructure. He traces his career back to his first tunnelling project, the Portsmouth waste water project, which got underway last century, and then through the self-delivery sections he managed on some of London's biggest infrastructure works: HS1, the Olympic Park, the Tottenham Court Road station upgrade, the Farringdon Crossrail tunnels, the Bank station upgrade, and Euston HS2 station.
The evening follows a set format: the lecture itself, built around case studies, followed by a Q&A. After that, there's a recap of BTSYM's 2026 activities and a look ahead to 2027, and the whole thing wraps up with a networking reception in the ICE Kendal's bar. If you can't make it in person, it's also available online.
