Piano recital by Ashley Fripp of six works by Frédéric Chopin, followed by a complimentary champagne reception at the 1901 Arts Club.
Ashley Fripp brings a recital of Frédéric Chopin to the 1901 Arts Club in Waterloo on Friday 23 October, part of a series by CityMusic Promotions that focuses on Chopin's solo piano works. The evening is built around two identical performances, each about an hour long and played from memory, with the first starting at 6:30pm and the second at 9:00pm. Both are preceded by a complimentary champagne reception served from half an hour before the recital.
Fripp's programme gathers six of Chopin's piano pieces: Berceuse, Op. 57; Barcarolle, Op. 60; Scherzo no. 3 in C sharp minor, Op. 39; Scherzo no. 4 in E major, Op. 54; Fantasy Impromptu, Op. 66; and Andante spianato et Grande polonaise brillante, Op. 22. It's a wide-ranging set that moves from the lullaby of the Berceuse and the boat-song of the Barcarolle through the more energetic Scherzi and the Fantasy Impromptu, and finishes with the Andante spianato et Grande polonaise brillante.
The series takes its cue from the way Chopin's music was originally heard. Much of it was written for the intimate Parisian and London salons of the aristocracy rather than the large concert halls of today, and the 1901 Arts Club, with its period elegance, is pitched as a setting that echoes those original rooms. The two identical performances on the same evening mean you can choose the pre-dinner slot or the post-dinner one, with the champagne reception coming before each.
