Black Country, New Road play new arrangements of their songs with the Orchestra of English National Opera, conducted by André de Ridder, in ENO's 'Sessions at the London Coliseum'.
Black Country, New Road play the London Coliseum on Friday 13 November, their first night at the venue. They'll be joined by the Orchestra of English National Opera, with the whole thing curated and conducted by André de Ridder. It's part of ENO's Sessions at the London Coliseum strand, which puts collaboration and experimentation at its core.
The set is built around new arrangements of songs from their third album, Forever Howlong, which reached number 3 in the UK charts. That record marked a complete creative reset for the band, with shared vocal and songwriting duties and expansive arrangements drawing on chamber pop, folk and prog influences. You'll hear the title track, 'Forever Howlong', alongside 'Happy Birthday' and 'For the Cold Country'. These new versions were written with collaborators including Owen Pallett, formerly of Arcade Fire, as well as Josephine Stephenson and Fiona Brice.
It's a different shape from where they started. Their Mercury Prize-nominated debut, For the First Time, and the UK Top 5 Ants From Up There fused jazz, post-rock and klezmer, and Live at Bush Hall earned a five-star review from the Guardian. This show takes the songs from Forever Howlong and opens them up for an orchestra, with André de Ridder at the helm. He's worked with Dirty Projectors, The Flaming Lips and Gorillaz, and first collaborated with the band during the pandemic when they recorded an online concert for Other Voices and Haldern Pop Festival.
