The London Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Dima Slobodeniouk with Kirill Gerstein on piano, plays Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 2 and works by Richard Strauss.
The London Philharmonic Orchestra are at the Royal Festival Hall on Friday 2 April 2027, with pianist Kirill Gerstein joining them. It's part of the LPO's Classical Season for Spring/Summer 2027, and the whole evening runs about two hours and twenty-five minutes.
The programme puts Richard Strauss and Ludwig van Beethoven side by side. Strauss opens the night with Death and Transfiguration, and then Gerstein takes the lead for Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 2. The second half returns to Strauss with the Der Rosenkavalier Suite, so the evening starts and ends with him, with Beethoven sitting in the middle.
There's a bit of a theme running through it, too. The programme notes describe Strauss as "music's supreme storyteller" and Beethoven as "the greatest composer of all time", and the whole thing is framed around the 200th anniversary of Beethoven's death. Gerstein is the one bringing the piano into the mix; the Süddeutsche Zeitung has written about his "idiosyncratic sound worlds" and "universal understanding of music", and that he brings a personal touch to every note.
