Immersive audiovisual concert in which pianist Xiaowen Shang plays Bach's compositions set against high-resolution cosmic imagery from NASA and ESA.
Bach in Space comes to the Shaw Theatre on Friday 20 November, a live piano performance of Johann Sebastian Bach paired with high-resolution cosmic imagery from the NASA and ESA archives. The projections aren't just running in the background; they follow the music's phrasing and dynamics, so the visuals shift as the piano does.
At the piano is Xiaowen Shang, an award-winning pianist and harpsichordist and Royal Academy of Music graduate. She was named one of BBC Music Magazine's Rising Stars of 2024 and has performed at Wigmore Hall and the Royal Albert Hall. The show draws on the mathematical precision and architectural logic of Bach's Baroque music, which the organisers say mirrors the laws of physics, and sets it against deep-space imagery like the Engraved Hourglass Nebula and the Sombrero Galaxy. It premiered in Munich, where the German press called it 'an otherworldly Bach'.
