Birmingham Rep's stage adaptation of Khaled Hosseini's novel about two women, Mariam and Laila, who become Rasheed's wives in war-torn Afghanistan.
A Thousand Splendid Suns opens at Richmond Theatre on Monday 22 March, with the production running through to Saturday 27 March. It's Birmingham Rep's stage adaptation of Khaled Hosseini's bestselling novel, which has sold over 38 million copies worldwide and is described as the author's spiritual sequel to The Kite Runner.
The story starts in 1992 in an Afghanistan ravaged by war. Mariam, sent to Kabul at fifteen to marry Rasheed, is later joined by Laila, an orphaned girl born a generation later who becomes Rasheed's second wife. The two women, forced to share the same husband, become unlikely allies as the Taliban take power and they face starvation, brutality and fear, with love, family and friendship their only escape. Rina Fatania plays Mariam, and the production is based on Hosseini's book, adapted by Ursula Rani Sarma, produced by Birmingham Rep and directed by Kimberley Sykes, with design by Simon Kenny.
