Free hybrid panel of three former JB Harley Research Fellows reflecting on their cartography research and the impact of the fellowship.
The Warburg Institute is hosting A Legacy in Maps: Celebrating the Harley Fellowships on Thursday 5 November, a panel that brings together three former Harley Fellows to talk about their research and the impact the fellowship had on their work. It's an evening dedicated to the JB Harley Research Fellowships in the History of Cartography, which were established in London in 1992 in memory of Brian Harley (1932-91), a founding co-editor of the History of Cartography Project and one of the field's leading theoretical thinkers.
The fellowships are described as the only ones of their kind in Europe, open to anyone pursuing advanced research in the history of cartography who wants to work with the historical map collections of the United Kingdom, with awards ranging up to £2,000. The three former Fellows gather to reflect on their own research, the work the fellowship made possible, and the difference it's made to their careers and to map history at large. Mike Heffernan, chair of the JB Harley Fellowships Trust, will introduce the session.
The panel features Xuerong Chen (Fudan University, Shanghai, 2026 Fellow), Charlotte Evans (University of Cambridge, formerly University of Manchester, 2024 Fellow), and John Moore (University of Glasgow Library, 2016 Fellow). The Warburg itself is devoted to global cultural history and the role of images in society, and visitors are also invited to see the Night Maps exhibition while they're there.
