Candlelit live theatrical experience by Mystery Ensemble of Danny Elfman scores from Tim Burton's films, part of the venue's Halloween weekend.
Mystery Ensemble bring Tim Burton's Universe to St George's Hall on Friday 30 October, as part of the venue's Halloween weekend. It's a candlelit journey through Tim Burton's cinematic world, with the scores of his lifelong collaborator Danny Elfman at the heart of it. The ensemble performs the material in its own arrangements, and they bill the night as a live theatrical experience rather than a straight soundtrack concert, with soaring voices and bold instrumental colours that shift from the macabre to the magical inside the hall.
Beyond Elfman, the programme draws on Corpse Bride, Beetlejuice, Batman and Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. It's a broad sweep of Burton's most recognisable work, and the arrangements are the ensemble's own rather than a note-for-note recreation of the original recordings. The whole thing is played by candlelight, which fits the Halloween timing and the gothic leanings of the material.
Mystery Ensemble is a contemporary music studio founded in 2021 by Almin Alexander. Their wider repertoire reaches well beyond Burton, with film and TV soundtracks like Harry Potter, Star Wars, The Lord of the Rings and Wednesday, alongside tributes to Ludovico Einaudi, Hans Zimmer, John Williams and Joe Hisaishi, and classical works by Mozart, Bach and Beethoven. This night is a focused slice of that, built around the Burton and Elfman partnership.
