More than 300 Pop Vox Choir singers, with a live band, play classic and contemporary Christmas songs, seasonal readings and a sing-along with a Santa appearance.
Pop Vox Choir are taking over St George's Hall on Sunday 6 December for The Sound of Christmas, and they're bringing a proper crowd with them. There are more than 300 singers on stage, so the scale is the first thing you'll notice. They're backed by a live band, which adds a full, modern sound to a mix of classic and contemporary Christmas songs, seasonal readings and a sing-along. Santa makes an appearance at both showings, too.
It's a big choir in a big room. St George's Hall is one of the finest neo-classical buildings in the world and is Grade I listed. The idea came in the early 1800s from Liverpudlians concerned by the lack of a venue for the city's triennial music festivals; shares were sold to raise the funds, and it was decided that one building would serve both the festivals and the Civil and Crown Courts. It fell into disrepair in the 1980s but reopened in April 2007 following a £23m award-winning refurbishment, and it's now a focal point for cultural, community, civic, corporate and performing arts activity. Central to Liverpool's Cultural Quarter and within a designated World Heritage Site, it played its part in the city's successful bid to become European Capital of Culture in 2008.
