One-night-only Liverpool premiere of Pergolesi's Stabat Mater on period instruments, with soprano Abigail Barker and countertenor Gleb Zakharov as soloists.
Mystery Ensemble are bringing Pergolesi's Stabat Mater to St George's Hall on Friday 27 November, a one-night-only Liverpool premiere. It's a piece of music with a bit of a story behind it: Pergolesi wrote it in the final weeks of his life, and it only premiered after he'd passed. Since then, it's stood as one of the most well-regarded works of the Baroque era—a hymn of sorrow and celestial beauty that went on to inspire composers from Bach to Vivaldi, and singers as varied as Montserrat Caballé, Cecilia Bartoli, Renée Fleming and Philippe Jaroussky.
This particular staging is built around the acoustics of St George's Hall, with subtle lighting and period instruments. They're playing at the authentic Neapolitan church pitch of A=415, which is a lower, warmer tuning than what you'll hear in most modern concerts; it gives the music a darker, more velvety colour. On the solo parts, you'll have soprano Abigail Barker and countertenor Gleb Zakharov, with Bob Porter directing the ensemble.
The Mystery Ensemble themselves are professional musicians who make a point of programming unique shows in non-standard venues across the UK, so this fits right into their way of working. They're billing this as a one-night-only Liverpool premiere, so it's a single performance rather than a run.
