Brand-new comedy by Jonathan Larkin about the Dingle and its legendary landlady Big Betty McDowd of the Viscount.
Jonathan Larkin brings Perms Of Endearment to the Royal Court Theatre on Roe Street, running from Friday 19 February to Saturday 13 March 2027. It's billed as a brand-new comedy, built around family stories, big personalities and the beating heart of the Dingle, with the legendary landlady Big Betty McDowd of the Viscount at its centre. If you know the Dingle, you know the kind of characters Larkin is drawing from—the sort of larger-than-life figures that make for a good story over a pint.
The Royal Court itself is a proper part of the city's theatre history. It opened in 1881 on the site of Cooke's Royal Amphitheatre of Arts, and both Richard Burton and Judi Dench made their professional stage debuts here. It's a nautical-themed Art Deco building on Roe Street with a 1,186-capacity main house, known for debuting productions with a Liverpool theme—which fits the bill for a show rooted in the Dingle. Down in the basement, there's also a 150-seat Studio space for smaller theatre productions and stand-up comedy, so it's a venue that handles both the big nights and the more intimate stuff.
