Coming-of-age drama by Fatima Ali Omar and staged by Side eYe about two best friends navigating ambition and friendship in a Birmingham grammar school.
Off-Key plays at Unity Theatre on Tuesday 3 and Wednesday 4 November, both nights starting at 7:30pm. It's a coming-of-age drama about Black girlhood, ambition, and friendship, written by Fatima Ali Omar and staged by Side eYe.
The play is set in a Birmingham grammar school full of overachievers, political meltdowns, and teenage delusion. It follows best friends Sabrin and Ruqqiyah: Sabrin is secretly preparing for a life-changing music audition, while Ruqqiyah is orchestrating the fall of a problematic teacher. The story looks at what happens when the person who knows you best becomes someone you no longer recognise.
Side eYe is the award-winning collective behind Dugsi Dayz (2022) and Desperate Times (2023). They picked up the Edinburgh Untapped Award in 2023, and Dugsi Dayz also won the BBC Popcorn Award. They stage stories by Black Muslim women and their allies, and this tour is supported by Kayd Somali Arts and Culture.
