Screening of Fritz Lang's 1927 silent science-fiction masterpiece Metropolis, presented by the FACT Liverpool Architectural Society as part of the Picturehouse cinema programme.
FACT Liverpool is screening Metropolis on Tuesday 20 October, as part of the cinema programme run by Picturehouse at FACT. It's Fritz Lang's 1927 science-fiction masterpiece, and it's being presented by the FACT Liverpool Architectural Society as part of their The Architecture of Monumentality series.
If you've never seen it, Metropolis is one of the most influential films ever made. It's a silent epic set in a futuristic city divided by a rigid class system: the thinkers live in luxury above ground, while the workers toil in the depths below. Lang's vision of that city—the towering skyscrapers, the vast industrial machinery, and the sheer scale of the urban landscape—is what earned the film its reputation as a landmark of cinema. It's a film that's as much about the buildings and the city itself as it is about the people in it, which is why it fits so well into a series on the architecture of monumentality.
Because it's a silent film, it's a different kind of cinema experience than what you'll usually find. It's 150 minutes long, so you'll want to settle in for the full run. It's rated PG, and it's being shown at FACT, 88 Wood Street, in the city centre.

It's a big, ambitious piece of film history, and seeing it on the big screen is the only way to really take in the scale Lang was going for. If you're into architecture or early cinema, this is a good one to catch. You can find tickets and more details on the FACT website.
