Weekly open-mic night for original compositions hosted by Ian Prowse at The Cavern Pub, directly opposite the famous Cavern Club.
Ian Prowse hosts his Monday Club at The Cavern Pub on Monday 19 October, starting at 8:00 pm. It's a weekly open-mic night run by the Merseyside singer-songwriter, known for his work with Pele and Amsterdam, and the pub sits on Mathew Street, directly opposite the world-famous Cavern Club.
What sets the night apart from your usual open mic is a single, strict rule: no cover versions. Everything played has to be an original composition. It's not just for solo songwriters, either; full bands, poets, playwrights and comedians are all welcome. There's nothing pre-arranged — performers just turn up and play three songs, so the line-up changes every week. Over 15 years, more than 15,000 performances have gone through the room, and the night has helped break local acts like Red Rum Club, Keyside and She Drew The Gun, while hosting the likes of Miles Hunt, Dr. Robert and Guy Chambers.
Prowse himself is often called the 'Scouse Springsteen' and has shared stages with Elvis Costello and The Levellers, with Glastonbury and Reading among his festivals. The night started back in 2011 as a modest six-week experiment and has since grown into one of the city's longest-running live music institutions. It's a proper open mic in the oldest sense: you show up, you play your own stuff, and you're in the mix with whoever else decides to turn out that night.

There's one particular tradition that always brings the room together: a song about a chippy fight over a sausage, written and performed by Barry Jones, which the whole place sings in unison to close the night. Admission is free, and it kicks off at 8:00 pm at The Cavern Pub on Mathew Street.
