A two-hour creative writing workshop on autofiction led by artist Ellie Hoskins, suitable for all writing experience levels.
Ellie Hoskins is running a creative writing workshop at FACT on Saturday 17 October, and it's a free one. It's a two-hour session that centres on autofiction — that middle ground where you write about your own life but lean into the fictional side of things. Hoskins starts by sharing how she goes about her own writing, and then everyone there gets to craft a piece of autofiction of their own. You don't need to bring any equipment, and you don't need any previous writing experience to take part.
It's worth knowing who's leading it. Hoskins is an artist from North-West Cumbria, now based in Liverpool, whose work looks at the bleak, mundane and existentially absurd side of contemporary Britain. She usually works in multimedia installations that sit somewhere between a diary entry and a cartoon fever dream, and between tragedy and comedy. She brings together sculpture, video, text and sound to build immersive fictional worlds, finding unexpected emotion in the overlooked details of everyday life. If that sounds like your kind of thing, this workshop is a good way to see how she works from the inside.
The session runs alongside BRB, the group exhibition at FACT from 18 September to 6 December, in which Hoskins, Livi Wilmore and Mrs Luva-Luva explore how constant connectivity is reshaping our understanding of ourselves, each other and the world around us. If you're planning to go to the workshop, you can easily make a day of it and see the exhibition while you're there.
