Guided tour in small groups of Liverpool Cathedral's hidden corners and the top of its tower, for participants aged 14 or over.
Liverpool Cathedral is running its Above and Beyond Tour on Thursday 18 November, from 12:00 to 14:00. It's a guided tour of the cathedral's hidden corners, the parts the venue describes as usually off-limits to the general public. You'll go in a small group with an expert guide leading the way from top to bottom, which includes a trip up to the top of the tower.
It's worth knowing what you're signing up for before you book. The route involves a lot of steps and some very narrow passages, so it can't accommodate anyone with mobility issues, and it's not suitable if you're acrophobic or claustrophobic. Everyone on the tour has to be at least 14.
If you've spent time in the cathedral, you already know the scale of the place. It's a Grade I listed building, the largest in the UK and one of the largest in the world, and Historic England describes it as 'the last undoubted masterpiece of Gothic craftsmanship in England'. It was the crowning achievement of Sir Giles Gilbert Scott, who also designed Battersea Power Station and the red telephone box. Inside is the Grand Organ, with 10,268 pipes, the largest pipe organ in the UK.
